Self Love

We teach our children to be kind and compassionate and to love and respect others, but do we teach them to turn these qualities inward- to be kind and compassionate and to love and respect themselves too?

Self-love is a precise balance between accepting, appreciating and understanding who you are AND having the courage and humility for reflection and accountability. It is allowing yourself to be vulnerable but also trusting your inhibition when you feel threatened. Self-love is rooted in the narrative of your inner voice and requires both action and feeling, therefore, speak kindly to yourself (as a parent) and encourage your children to do the same (behaviour is mirrored).

Self-love is an ecosystem of mental, physical and emotional effort. Feed your brain with goodness, take care of your body and be a kind human with good character. Self-Love is a concept that MUST be spoken about in your homes with your children, ask them what they love about themselves and be deliberate about reinforcing those qualities for them.

Benefits of self-love

🔹Improves self-esteem (how we see ourselves)
🔹Increased resilience
🔹Increased productivity
🔹Decreased stress / anxiety
🔹Fosters a growth mindset (speak kindly to yourself)
🔹Increased self-awareness

💙 Practice self-care (knowing what your mind, body and heart need in the moment and making the time to give it to yourself).

@thabahotel thank you for hosting us 💙 happy 20 year anniversary.

Movement

A year ago, if i told my inner child that I’d be training for a half marathon she probably would have given me the side-eye in disbelief. @sowetomarathon

It’s been a year since i started running and through movement, i have seen an incredible shift in my overall wellbeing. When trauma stays stuck in our body, the brain responds with physical irritation which presents itself in the form of muscle tension, insomnia, memory loss, lack of concentration, anxiety and other disturbances.
Regular movement allows the body to move out of this state and teaches the nervous system to be more flexible.
Running-which is my choice of movement-is another piece in the coming together of my puzzle. It has given little me far more than adult me ever imagined – safety, a community of people, friendships and a sense of belonging.

Everyone can move, the key is to find a form of movement that feels right for you. Encourage your children from an early age to engage in regular movement that activates the brain and stimulates heart rate. Incorporate movement into family time and use it as an opportunity to connect with each other

Benefits of movement
🔹Regulates and restores balance of the nervous system
🔹Improved physical fitness
🔹Promotes brain plasticity
🔹Deepens understanding of the mind and body
🔹Increased cognition
🔹Improved intelligence
🔹Builds resilience and rhythm

PROTECT OUR CHILDREN 💙
05-11-2022

Children are among the most vulnerable members of our society. They depend on adults to teach them how to integrate into society.
🔹Every child has the right to an identity.
🔹Every child has the right to social development, education and to be adequately nourished.
🔹Every child has the right to basic and appropriate care and psychological safety.
🔹Every child has the right to be protected from exploitation, abuse, violence and immoral behaviour.

Our rascals calendar provides the caregiver with the tools needed to facilitate these basic rights of every child through daily activities and challenges that build resilience, facilitate positive brain health, reinforce healthy habits and teach concepts of self-discovery, kindness and empathy.

Support a child in need during the month of November through acts of kindness.

The Inner Child

The inner child experience typically informs and influences our psychological and emotional wellbeing as we transition from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. It is the foundational blueprint that impacts our self-esteem and determines the quality of our relationships with self and others.

As we navigate through life, we will inevitably encounter situations that invoke feelings of guilt, abandonment, mistrust or neglect – this is trauma; not necessarily a catastrophic event but also an infringement of psychological safety.

The philosophy for Resilient Minds is to provide a platform for young minds to learn how to experience safety independently. To be able to discern situations that cost dignity, energy and time and to trust their intuition so that when they are hit from a blind spot, they have the tools and the confidence to recoil quickly. If I have learnt anything in the last 3 weeks, it is that inner consciousness is the roadmap to successful adulting and that by facing the aspects of our wounding and responding in a way that serves our highest self – we are also choosing to protect the child that lives within.

🔹When you need to connect with your inner child, do something that invokes a feeling of safety and calm. For me, it is in creative expression 💙

The Journey

Earlier this year I completed a training programme that taught me the value of perspective – the choice to view interruption as an intervention or a crisis. It felt like the coming together of my personal puzzle and a calling to a dream ready to be awakened. Perhaps it was my golden snitch.

In this, Resilient Minds was born. A journey of healing the inner child, a journey of self-discovery and a mindset shift from survival to purposeful living; a collection of experiences that continue to guide my quest for meaning and purpose – resulting in the design of a range of products that aim to instill values of self-esteem within young minds while they probe and explore the uniqueness of their individual identity in a fun and interactive way.

Living intentionally means knowing who you are and that the importance of self-discovery must be cultivated at grassroot level. Our children are influential and my purpose is to influence in a positive way that inspires values of empathy, generosity, confidence, compassion and kindness (to self and others).

I am so excited to share this initiative with you and your families, I hope that it will make a difference in your homes and I pray that it inspires kinder, happier and more confident humans.

Heritage Day

I recently visited the UK for the first time and spent 4 weeks getting to know family I’ve never met before.
In doing so, I discovered and collected new pieces to my personal puzzle of self-discovery.

I come from a family of admirable strength. A family of determination, love, loss, separation, heartache and perseverance and in that, i was able to connect with them over the familiarity of Indian culture and Islamic faith.
You see, in embracing your true authentic self, you must first discover who you are; understanding your heritage is the driver behind this discovery.

Heritage day in a South African context is a celebration of the democracy and coming together of our beautiful country and its unique story – a story of pain and sacrifice but more importantly a story of success and victory. The unity of a rainbow nation and the spirit of Ubuntu. An acceptance of each individuals unique value and belief system, tradition and culture. A day to celebrate everyone.

Heritage fosters connection in different ways – be it in a name, in music, in food, in religion, in values, in tradition, in silence, in heartache, in pain and love and loss and in every imaginable way possible. Heritage brings people and family together.

Happy Heritage Day South Africa.

Reflection

We all have a story. A story that shapes, guides & teaches us about ourselves if we pay enough attention.

Reflection is basically about being able to sit with yourself and recognise who you are and what you’re capable of. Through self-reflection you pick up on skills you didn’t know you had, you’re able to look back at a situation and see a clearer picture – perhaps with a little more understanding.
You learn forgiveness and establish boundaries.

Reflection is necessary for cultivating resilience. It allows you to be honest with yourself and your actions and build better relationships.

🔹Empower your kids to narrate their own experiences. Listen to how they reflect on their day and ask them what they’ve learnt about themselves through reflection.

Rays of Sunshine

“Nothing hurts a good soul and a kind heart more than to live amongst those who cannot understand it.”
I’ve navigated through life feeling very isolated and never really experiencing a sense of belonging. There are many reasons for this and I’ve only really been practicing asking for help in the past year. Whilst I believe that everything we need – to overcome obstacles & challenges – lies within, i also believe that human connection is absolutely necessary.

Support structures, or rays of sunshine 🌞 as i like to call them is essential to building confidence and psychological safety. These are the people who celebrate in your joy and comfort you in sadness.
They are the people you feel safe with, the people you trust and the people who you rely on in good AND in challenging times.

Having a support structure also allows for a regulated nervous system and reduced anxiety. Support structures facilitate social and emotional development, inspires confidence, teamwork, connection and empathy.

🔹Do your kids know who their rays of sunshine are?
🔹Do they understand the importance and value of trust and how to build trusting relationships?
🔹Do they know what the foundation of healthy relationships are?
🔹Do you speak to them about the relationships they cultivate at school and with family members?
🔹Do you teach them to be kind and how to show kindness?

Reminder: Be a ray of sunshine to those who don’t have a tribe also.
